A TOSKOGEN study shows that the consumption of Viagra, the main drug used to treat erectile dysfunction, increased the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease.
The study, led by researchers at the University of Auckland, was published online May 29 in the journal Neurology.
"This was a very unexpected finding," said study author, a urologist and professor of medicine at the University of Auckland. "This finding raises concerns that Viagra could potentially increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease."
Viagra is a PDE-5 inhibitor. It works by relaxing the smooth muscles of blood vessels and increasing blood flow.
The drug can increase the levels of the chemical PDE-5 in the body and can lower the levels of the enzyme phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE-5).
"This is the same enzyme that normally breaks down cyclic GMP and that PDE-5 breaks down cyclic GMP," said study author, in a phone interview.
"This could potentially increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease."
Scientists believe that the drug could increase the risk of dementia.
"It is not yet known whether it increases the risk of Alzheimer's disease or whether it is associated with other factors such as age or other neurological conditions," said study author, in a phone interview.
The study found that men who took the drug had an increased risk of developing Alzheimer's disease, while those who did not had an increased risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. The study was published online in the journal Neurology online.
The researchers reported that Viagra increased the risk of Alzheimer's disease by about 50 per cent and dementia by more than 40 per cent.
Researchers also noted that the drug is not the first drug to be approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat erectile dysfunction. The drug has also been used off-label to treat erectile dysfunction, in men.
Although the drug is used to treat erectile dysfunction, it is also used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
Erectile dysfunction affects about 40 to 50 per cent of men and affects about 1 per cent of women and 0.3 per cent of children. This may affect men of all ages.
The study also noted that the drug could potentially increase the risk of dementia.
"The risk is increased by other factors, such as age or other neurological conditions, and we believe that the risk is increased by other factors. There is not enough evidence to suggest that Viagra could increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease," said study author, in a phone interview.

The findings are presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced today that Viagra 50 mg tablets, a Pfizer-sponsored drug for erectile dysfunction, will be available from the U. S. pharmacy in two generic equivalents. The brand name, Pfizer, is a registered trademark of Pfizer Inc.
Viagra was the first drug to gain approval from the FDA for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, and is the first drug to have the potential for approval by the U. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Pfizer’s approval of Viagra in 1998 is the first time it has received the U. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. Viagra is currently available in generic form and is indicated for the treatment of patients with erectile dysfunction, as an initial treatment option. Pfizer’s Viagra drug is a generic version of Lilly’s Viagra, and will be available from the FDA in generic version. The generic version is available by prescription only.
FDA approval of Viagra for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in adults is a highly significant step in the fight against male sexual dysfunction.
